Tropical storm 'Marilyn' unlikely to make a landfall

Tropical depression Marilyn is moving slowly and unlikely to make a landfall, according to a weather expert.

Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) weather specialist Chris Perez said Marilyn was nearly stationary.

"We still don't expect it to make landfall over any part of the country," he said.

Marilyn was last seen at 1,045 kilometers east of Basco, Batanes.

It has maximum sustained winds of 55 kph near the center and gustiness of up to 70 kph.

Perez said Marilyn may become a tropical storm before it leaves the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR), which PAGASA expects to be either on Sunday night or early Monday.

Meanwhile, the southwest monsoon affecting southern Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao will bring scattered rain showers and thunderstorms over Metro Manila, Central Luzon, Calabarzon, Bicol Region, Visayas, Zamboanga Peninsula, Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao, Soccsksargen, and Northern Mindanao.

Isolated rain showers will prevail over the rest of the country due to localized thunderstorms.

The whole archipelago will experience moderate to strong winds with moderate to rough seas, PAGASA said.
