Makati to crown Kylie Verzosa as 2019 Mayflower Queen
The Makati City government will crown Filipina actress-model and Miss International 2016 Kylie Verzosa as this year’s Mayflower Queen on Friday, May 31, 4 p.m. at the Makati City Hall Building II lobby, before the procession at 5 p.m.
Makati Vice Mayor Monique Lagdameo and Rep. Luis Campos will accompany Mayor Abby Binay in the proclamation and crowning ceremonies. Verzosa will be escorted by actor and model Marco Gumabao.
Binay said the city was keen on keeping traditional celebration salive so that the youth of the city would get to experience and pass on the tradition.
She said the tradition was part of the national heritage that should be experienced not only by older generations but also by generations to come.
Verzosa was crowned Miss Philippines International 2016 and Miss International 2016. She is the sixth Filipina to win the international crown. She currently works as an actress in the television series Los Bastardos, where her escort, Gumabao, is a co-star. As a preschool teacher, Verzosa is an advocate of depression and suicide awareness and prevention. She also has done print and ramp modelling.
According to the Makati City Museum and Cultural Affairs Office, the Queen and 53 other sagalas, or princesses, will be wearing traditional Filipino costumes that represent the country’s culture and will ride on carriages and floats adorned with flowers for the procession.
This year’s Flores de Mayo is not only represented by princesses of the city’s different barangays, but also by different offices of Makati City Hall and from private companies that include Rockwell Land Corp. and Makati Square.
Flores de Mayo, or Flowers of May in English, is an annual festival in the Philippines celebrated as a devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary. It was first introduced by the Spaniards to Filipinos in 1854.
